October 2, 2014 marked the first service project I participated in while in the nursing program. I served at the Fred Jordan Mission where we provided backpacks and clothing to families in the surrounding Los Angeles area.
Nursing Dx:
Shock related to uncertainty as evidence by not receiving any direction on how to deal with various situations.
S/S:
anger, laughing, confusion, frustration, joy, exhaustion, judgement, grace, mercy, shock, wonder, awe, disappointment, giving, bitterness, bonding, impatience and love
Nursing Notes:
Signs and symptoms seemed to contradict one another as a variety of situations were observed. I witnessed the most grateful and most ungrateful, the sweetest and rudest, the helpful and unhelpful, the willing and unwilling and the humble and ignorant.

It was not until earlier this morning after hearing the teaching at church that I would come to realize the true purpose of serving at the Fred Jordan Mission.
"Let all the bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV)
It was frustrating to deal with some individuals that were picky with what they received, making them seem ungrateful. Thus, it was difficult to be merciful and not judge those who seemed as if they were taking advantage of this amazing organization.
"Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:1-2 (ESV)
As the teaching dove into this verse, I realized that we were not distributing backpacks and clothing to these families but rather distributing His love. We were "imitating" the love of God to these families. I have now reevaluated my perspective on this service project by thinking in terms of how I actually felt rather than what I did.
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us." 1 John 4:7-12 (ESV)
This verse was definitely the home run of the service project. I was bothered that some of these families seemed to be ungrateful of what they were given. I thought, "How could they expect to receive more by sending their children through the exit to come back and get more backpacks once they have already received one?" Then, while listening to the teaching all of the missing pieces that I felt after serving at the Fred Jordan Mission where found; completing the perfect puzzle. One of the most important missing pieces was knowing who God is. Sometimes it is difficult to imagine not learning about God since I grew up always knowing there was a God. But what about those who grow up and never hearing anything about God? This is probably one of the MAJOR factors as to why these families seemed angry or picky. I then became humbled to know God and how He loves me.
Medical Dx:
Humbleness
Serving at the Fred Jordan Mission benefited my relationship with God. I will soon be having patients that do not want to receive medications or will be abusing medications. I need to be able to look past what they are choosing to do and focus on a more holistic view. I will be thinking on terms of, WHY and WHAT is making my patient make that decision? I will then be able to help them through their endeavors by imitating God's love (mercy and grace) rather than judgment .
